Off the court had a personality that was infectious and brought joy to everyone around him. A mentor to many young players and a player who made everyone feel part of the league. He won the Ginther award for mentoring in 2014.
On the court was an old school bruiser type of player who hit hard and was difficult to play against. A shut down defender who had speed, driving ability and elite hockey sense. Never shied away from the physical side of the game and was a tricky veteran who knew how to play tough but seldom got penalties.
Later in his career his ball handling improved and he became more of all around defenseman. Had his best offensive season, 26 points, in his 16th season. Won the Regular Season Assist Title that year. Won 2 Most Improved Defenseman awards in ‘04 & ‘06 before a remarkable stretch of 8 Defenseman of the Year awards between 2007-2019. A constant member of the Selects during his career, appearing 6 times, winning 3 Championships.
A player with a heart as big as any in league history.
